 |
|
The International Medical
University began in 1992 as the International
Medical College, or IMC, Malaysia’s
first private medical college. IMC became
a University in 1999, but the University
has remained true to key elements of
the IMC vision, which are to widen access
to professional healthcare education,
and to use innovative, integrated and
student-centred means in providing that
education.
Since 1999 the University’s
growth and development has been in developing
clinical schools in Seremban and Batu
Pahat, our own Honours degree courses
in Pharmacy and Nursing, and in establishing
research as a core activity, together
with development of postgraduate research
Masters and PhD programmes. We are already
the preferred private school for medicine
and pharmacy in Malaysia.

Moi
University Kenya: School of Public Health
|
|
 |
|
Brief History:
The School of Public Health (SPH) was
established in October 1998 by the Moi
University Council in recognition of
the need for training high-level manpower
in public health. The School's training
programmes have been developed to meet
Moi University's mission of producing
skilled and practical health professionals
who contribute to the realization of
the country's national goals. The School
thus seeks to provide high quality interdisciplinary
training in public health for a range
of health personnel, including policy
makers, medical practitioners, academicians
and researchers.
Purpose of the School:
The School of Public Health is a
postgraduate research-oriented training
institution, which also offers professional
public health services to the government,
non-governmental agencies and communities.
Whereas many countries in Africa, including
Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Ghana
have established institutes or schools
of public health to address their manpower
needs in the areas of public health,
in Kenya, such training has largely
been attainable in European and North
American Universities at a very high
cost. The Moi University's School of
Public Health is currently the only
purposely established institution in
the country that offers opportunities
for local training of public health
professionals at postgraduate level,
which is affordable, context specific
and responsive to the country's needs
Mission and Vision:
The mission of the School of Public
Health is to promote improvements of
health of the people of Kenya. The vision
of the School is to become a regional
and international centre for excellence
in the training, research, practice
and consultancy in public health.

The University of the
Philippines Manila (UPM) is one of the
seven autonomous universities under
the University of the Philippines System.
Most of the 12 units that now compose
UP Manila, started as independent units
decades ago. In 1977, these units were
grouped together with the establishment
of the Health Sciences Center. In 1979,
the Center was elevated to the status
of an autonomous university and was
renamed University of the Philippines
Manila in 1983.
In 1987, a major reorganization was
undertaken which transformed UPM's philosohy,
mission, organizational structure, governance
and academic programs to what they are
now.
UP Manila currently
has 9 degree granting units: The College
of Allied Medical Professions, College
of Arts and Sciences, College of Dentistry,
College of Medicine, College of Nursing,
College of Pharmacy, College of Public
Health, National Teacher Training Center
for Health Professions, and School of
Health Sciences in Palo, Leyte.
The Extension Services and the Research
Development Units of UP Manila enhance
its goal of excellence as a center for
academic training, research, development
and rendering service to the Filipino,
thus contributing to the development
of the country. These are the Philippine
General Hospital, the National Institutes
of Health and the Office of the Ugnayan
ng Pahinungod and Continuing Education.
Imbued with the spirit of collegiality,
sharing of new ideas and skills, collaborating
and complementing the individual, groups
and sectors within and among the different
academic units and fostering linkages
with other institutions here and abroad,
UP Manila is leading the way to the
future.
Vision of the College
of Public Health (CPH):
An outstanding, relevant and responsive
institution of learning committed to
the values of excellence, integrity
and service to the Filipino people and
the rest of South East Asia.
Mission of the College
of Public Health:
The CPH-UPM shall constantly strive
to become an outstanding and relevant
institution of higher learning. Thus,
it shall provide the highest quality
of advanced instruction, professional
education, training, basic applied research,
and community services, thereby producing
outstanding scholars, practitioners
and leaders in health systems development.
In this endeavor, equal importance to
the content and process of health systems
development will be given.

University
of Debrecen, Ungary: School of Public
Health |
|
 |
|
The University of Debrecen,
like other integrated institutions of
higher education in the country, was
formed on January 1, 2000 by (re)uniting
formerly independent institutions. Its
historical roots reach back to the foundation
of the Reformed College of Debrecen
(1538), whose three academic sections
later served as the base for the Hungarian
Royal University of Sciences, created
by Statute no. 36 in 1912. With this
past of more than 450 years, the University
of Debrecen is the oldest institution
of higher education in continuous operation
in Hungary based in the same city. Higher
education in agriculture began in 1868,
when the National Higher School of Agriculture
was formed in Debrecen.
Solving regional, national
and international problems of any kind
requires broad-based efforts of many
sectors relying on a wide range of disciplines.
This is even more true for combatting
health problems of populations the roots
of which are intertwined and wide-ranging.
Public health aims at the improvement
of health, prolongation of life and
improvement of the quality of life in
populations by using a multidisciplinary
theoretical approach translated into
effective intersectorial practice. The
Hungarian Government, recognising that
these elements of effective public health
can be implemented only by highly trained
professionals, established the School
of Public Health as an independent institute
within the University of Debrecen financed
in part by a World Bank loan. Postgraduate
M.Sc. training in public health was
launched in the School in September
1996 followed by launching an M.Sc.
course in Environmental Health one year
later. A Ph.D. programme in Preventive
Medicine and Public Health started in
September 1999, and M.Sc. courses in
Quality Assurance and Improvement in
Health Care, Health Promotion, Epidemiology
are offered from September 2000.
The teaching staff
of the school has been recruited on
a national basis: distinguished lecturers
of other universities as well as leading
experts from national institutes of
public health participate in the programmes
in order to ensure the highest quality
of postgraduate training. Accredited
teaching laboratories of the School
operate in four county offices of the
National Public Health Service.
The School is a member of the Association
of the Schools of Public Health in the
European Region (ASPHER).

University
of Hong Kong: Department of Community
Medicine |
|
 |
|
In response to the
SARS crisis and the recommendations
of the SARS Expert Committee the university
established the School of Public Health
and the Public Health Research Centre
inside of the Department of Community
Medicine in 2004. The Master of Public
Health (MPH) degree programmes were
also introduced to address the continuing
need for professional training in the
public health sciences.
In the past 10 years
the Department of Community Medicine
has contributed significantly to the
international literature and to health
in the local population as highlighted
below:
The department has a long history of
tobacco control, advocacy and related
research achieving international recognition.
In 2005, Dr SM McGhee, Dr SY Ho, Dr
M Schooling, et al, with Professor R
Peto of Oxford University and Dr KH
Mak of Department of Health were the
first world-wide to report a dose-response
relationship in the risk of death from
stroke after exposure to second hand
smoke and provided critical support
for legislation on smoke-free policies
in workplaces. (published in British
Medical Journal).
The department has also a long history
of research in environmental pollutants.
In 2002 it was the first to demonstrate
worldwide the independent effects of
air pollutants on deaths from cardiopulmonary
disease and benefits of interventions
reported in the Lancet. It also reported
the first study on dioxins and PCBs
in breast milk in Hong Kong, jointly
with Departments of Paediatrics and
Community Medicine in Chinese University
of Hong Kong, in a World Health Organization
collaborative study.
Hong Kong has made remarkable gains
in health, exemplified very low infant
and maternal mortality, increase in
life expectancy, and the elimination
of many communicable diseases through
the application of sound public health
principles and practices. Although much
has been achieved, an ageing population,
growing prevalence of chronic diseases
(cancer, heart disease), infectious
diseases, smoking, changes in lifestyle
and behaviour continue to present challenges
to the public's health in Hong Kong
in the 21st century.
